My name is Rebecca Mason
My iwi are Ngāti Kuia and Ngāti Koata, so I have a deep connection to Te Tauihu (the Nelson–Marlborough region).
My mother’s family name is McRae. The name comes from the Gaelic “mac rath”, which means “son of grace”. The McRaes are one of the oldest Scottish Highlands families, and originally came from Beauly, near Inverness, around the 13th century.
These are the two worlds – Māori and Pākehā – that I have walked between my whole life. Now I can help you walk them too.
Why I love what I do
I am passionate about true partnership, co-governance and joint decision making . While working in the public and private sectors, I have noticed that government, business and Iwi Māori don’t always work together as well as they could. It is my goal to change this.
I have a background in both the corporate and government sectors and a strong connectivity and involvement with Te Tauihu Iwi. I have worked for and provided organisational and partnership advice to multiple organisations involved in the climate change, emergency management, health, housing and researchsectors as well as the global pharmaceutical industry. This breadth of experience has given me a unique ability to work across and between different industries and cultures. I am self-motivated and have a high energy approach to work and life. I bring people and ideas together, motivate companies, businesses and organisations to achieve significant partnership based results and outcomes.
My work
I bring extensive experience in managing collaborations and facilitating meetings in both the bicultural and business spaces. I believe in true partnership, in co-governance and joint decision-making.
I have lived in the United Kingdom and Aotearoa. I have worked globally for public and private sector organisations.
I help connect people, unite organisations, build enduring solutions and enable change.
Why Meihana Consulting?
I am often asked about the name of my company. My surname, Mason, is the anglicised form of the Māori name Meihana.
I chose Meihana Consulting as a tribute to my tūpuna, especially my great-great-grandfather Meihana Kereopa.
Meihana Kereopa was born in Wakapuaka, near Nelson, and was a well-respected Ngāti Kuia political leader. He was one of the first Ngāti Kuia people to read and write English.
I have led and supported several ground-breaking collaborations:

The GetReal collaboration

GlaxoSmithKline and Utrecht University alliance

Te Tauihu Emergency Management Initiative

Te Tauihu Māori Business Network
